LECTURE

Benjamin Henry Latrobe came to America from England in 1795-96 and soon became the architect of choice for President Thomas Jefferson. He arrived at a time when eclecticism, particularly in the form of classicism, was first taking hold in the Western World. He brought with him radical new applications of the orders and strategies for merging prototypical forms such as temples, rotundas, and basilicas to produce plan types appropriate for but heretofore unseen in the new democratic republic. Three of his major residential commissions remain: Decatur House in Washington, D. C., an urban residence for a naval hero; Adena in Chillicothe, Ohio, a country residence for the man most responsible for Ohio statehood; and a suburban villa for Senator John Pope in Lexington, Kentucky. Using these houses and other related buildings, it is possible to trace the design trajectory of America's first professional architect as he invented the American house.
